Nate is a high school senior who has experienced more in his short life than a
young man should have to.  Nate grew up in Chicago as the youngest of nine
children raised by a single mother, Geraldine Allen.  Ms. Allen taught Nate and
his siblings the value of hard work and instilled in them a strong sense of
family that has helped them deal with the tragic shooting deaths of two
brothers - one of which occurred moments after dropping off the then 11-year
old Nate.  To ensure that Nate received a proper education, was well prepared
to reach his future goals, and was in a safe environment, Nate transferred to
St. Benedict for his senior year.  The transfer has proven challenging, but Nate
has met the obstacles head on by arriving early to school and staying late to
receive extra help from his teachers.  However another challenging aspect of
this transfer is the additional costs associated with the new school.  During
the tough economic times Nate and his mother are doing everything they can
to meet the financial obligations, including working long hours and
participating in a school sponsored work-study program that assists in Nate's
tuition.  The LPBC's goal is to offer Nate a scholarship to St. Benedict to
guarantee that Nate receives one thing that no one can ever take away from
him - a good education.
Nate Jones:
Bethany Pond and her children Torrie, Nathan, and Madelyn have
dealt with an amazing amount of health issues over the past few
years.  Nathan, who is 8 years old, was born with Neonatal
Sclerosing Cholangitis, an severe liver disease.  Nathan bravely
dealt with many major complications of this disease until he finally
received a liver transplant in April of 2008.  The transplant was
successful and Nathan continues his recovery.  Currently, Nathan
must make monthly clinic visits to ensure that the liver isn't rejected
and will be required to take anti-rejection medications for the rest of
his life.  In addition to Nathan's condition, 1-year old Madelyn was
born with numerous heart conditions:  Tricuspid Atresia, VSD, and
ASD.  Basically, the right side of Madelyn's heart did not fully
develop and she has a hole between the atria and ventricles in her
heart.  In her first year she has already experience 3 open heart
surgeries and will require one more at the age of 3.  Along with the
heart conditions, Madelyn was born with a clubfoot or TEV and
recently had surgery to correct this issue.  She requires specially
designed leg braces so that the foot does not regress back to the
initial condition.  Both Nathan and Madelyn require many
prescription medications and will for numerous years.
Unfortunately, Bethany is currently out of work while she focuses on
Nathan's and Madelyn's health issues.  While insurance has
helped pay for Madelyn and Nathan's procedures, there are
mounting housing, utility, and day-to-day bills.  Bethany and her
children are sacrificing to make ends meet, but they find
themselves in
immediate need of financial support.  While we all
feel the pinch of the current economic times, it is during difficult
times such as these that we need to go the extra mile and give
what we can to help others.

Matching Donations:
Please note that many companies offer
employee matching donation programs.
Therefore, please check with your Human
Resources department and verify if your
company will participate.  Last year an
additional $1,300 was raised from
matching donations and we have lots of
room for improvement.  The LPBC is happy
to help fill out any necessary paperwork
that is required for the matching donation.

Due to our growth (all because of our great supporters), the LPBC is starting to see double.  Your donations
have grown and the number of family nominations has increased.  It's time to do more!  Therefore, this year
we are trying something new - helping 2 families.  Below is information on each of the families.
